Jawbone, I approach the harp in much the same was as you. I have worked on bending some, but never truely concentrated on it or worried about it. But I am not one to copy songs note for note. I prefer to improvise alot, whether it is chugging rhythms, or playing along with a couple jamming cd's i have. I do know a couple songs mostly in 1st position, but i find copying others kinda boring.

MrCheze, I guess it all comes down to how serious you are and how far you want to take the harmonica. BTW, Jon's instructional materials are excellent. I consider myself lucky to be were I am with it since i have no formal music background what-so-ever. I am going to my son's 5th grade music class today to introduce them to the harmonica. I am far from and expert, but i think i can show them enough to get them interested. LOL, I think i am just about the right level so i don't overdo it with information and bore them. It's fun to play, keep it fun!

Sorry Jon - I was going to suggest that too, it is an excellent lesson, and has helped me a great deal. I just thought it sounded like MrC was getting frustrated and needed to get back to having some fun.

Say, I would suggest that you use the bending and tone workshop that you can download from this website,
Gindick.com. This 60 minute audio program will get you to open up your mouth and play from your throat.
The secret is in the throat articulation, but without the correct foundation of breathing and mouth shape,
and embouchyre, kee koo is just cookie spelled backwards.

It's at http://www.Gindick.com/bending_tone.asp

This may go against all the protocol. But I never worried about bending. I just learned all I could. I would just played with abandon, making all the different sounds I could with no worry about what was right or wrong (where no one could hear of course) Don't get too hung up on bending, get comfortable with the instrument, bending will come almost by accident, then run with it. Having said that have you tried the KEE KEE for unbent and KOO KOO for bent articulation. Hope this helps.
