I didn't know where to post this one but I wanted to share a quick story (I'll try to be quick!)
Visited my family on Thanksgiving. I have an 18 year old niece who is a freshman in college. She's very musically inclined; sings, plays the piano, etc.
She was playing some very nice 'classic pop' style riffs on the piano so I asked her if she could play some blues (hey, here's a chance to jam with another musician, right!?). She tells me that she's taking a 'musical theory' class in college and although she's doing just fine she has been struggling with really understanding the class. She really doesn't understand the chord progressions and really only plays things that are classical or more contemporary. So we got in a discussion and I found myself "teaching" (with a small "t") her about the I-IV-V progression. Of course, my only training on this has been through Jon's book and a few other youtube lessons. I guess that my simple understanding of the progression translated well and she suddenly 'got it' AND it helped her understand a few things in her class she was struggling to grasp!
So, she's going to work on some blues so that we can jam at Christmas. Thanks to Jon and all of you out there who have taught me so much and allowed me to pass it on for more 'life changing' experiences!
