RE: my first harmonica

Thanks for the help jbone! It doesnt sound whether I draw in hard or soft, so I think there might be a problem with the reed.

Also, its the actual coating of the wood on the playing surface thats coming off because I can tell the difference between the wood underneath and the shiny coat as they are different colors.

I'm going to try sending it back to Hohner, my music store is definetly not that friendly.

Thanks for the harp suggestion...i'll check it out

hi jane, welcome to this fine joint!
a couple of questions: are you drawing air in REALLY HARD on the #2 draw note? it's common with new players to use too much air. does that note sound ok when drawn gently? if not, you may have an obstruction on that reed and slot, or it could be a bad reed.

is the actual plating coming off the covers, or is it a clear substance? not to be gross but some folks have thicker saliva which builds up and flakes off a harp. could be mistaken for a clear coat.

if this is a bad harp, there's no sense taking it to the store where you bought it, they usually don't take them back even to swap out. hohner usa may be a good bet.
i'd like to recommend a bushman harp. velvet voice is a sweet sounding harp, and the delta frost model is probably the most durable and easy to play harp i've seen. the delta frost comes with a 30-day money back guarantee, no kidding! you won't find these harps at music stores, they are available at several different online music stores, among them coast2coast and harp depot.

no doubt some other folks will have questions and ideas for you jane. hope you stick around!!

Howdy,

I bought myself a Hohner Marine Band today and had a few questions about it.

First, when I draw in on 2, it has a really flat sound that is not like any other note. Is this normal or could it be broken or stuck? Or am I doing something wrong?

Also, I played for a couple hours today and on the front, the polish is already starting to chip and peel and the wood is swelling a little. Is this usual and should I just ignore it?

Thanks for all your help
