The solution to your problem is practice more! The pain should go away as the irritated spot becomes tougher. You are building a callouse. A few years back I had a similar problem. The corners of my top lip became irritated where the harp rubbed against it. I had little scabs under my moustache. I applied Neosporin brand antibiotic salve which irritated my skin and caused my lip tissue to swell. My top lip looked like I was doing silicone injections. I went to a walk in clinic one afternoon since I was on the road and couldn't get to my regular dermatologist. The "Doc in the Box" diagnosed folliculitis which is a bacterial infection in the hair follicles. He prescribed an even stronger topical antibiotic which only exacerbated the problem. When I finally got to the dermatologist he determined the swelling was caused by the antibiotics and there was no infection. I stopped using the antibiotic ointment and the swelling went down in no time.
But seriously i had a similar problem when i started Tongue Blocking, I was pushing too hard trying to get an air tight seal. Try relaxing more on your embouchure and letting the harp sit in your mouth rather than biting down or squeezing on it, try experimenting more with your hands to improve your cup and tone. It's amazing how by just sitting down and fidgetting with your fingers you can really improve upon your grip. I've been playing two years, and I am always messing with my grip to try to improve it, and it is becoming better all the time.
Hey vb - I'm not sure what your embouchure is, but possibly you are playing using the front of your lips too much. If you purse your lips too tight to get the single note you may get a tight, thin sound. But if you kind of "pout", get that bottom lip out and basically create the "U" shape with the inside of your bottom lip, you will get better tone and stop biting your lip. Jon covers all this sort of thing in his "Bending and Tone" lesson. Oh Yeah - take a break!!! but I know what you mean, once you get rollin' it's hard to stop that train. later - jawbone (north)
I did a marathon practice session yesterday. I don't know how long, but it was not only my longest ever, but I was really getting into it and playing aggressively. It would say that it ended up being my best playing yet.
However, I got to the point where I realized that my lips we almost numb from exhaustion. But that's not the bad thing. I also realized that the inside of my lip was getting just slightly caught between the harmonica and the lower left corner of my front left tooth. So after I stopped playing there was a little sore spot there.
This morning my lips still feel a little tired and that sore spot is still there a little bit. When I play this morning I am still pinching that spot inside my lip between the harmonica and the lower left corner of my front tooth.
Have any of you experienced this? What am I doing wrong and how do I correct it.
